News update

Hi this is the eighth grade student council. It was so nice to hear from you! The weather here is getting colder. This Friday is our first school dance of the year. We are all so excited! Halloween is just around the corner, and we are all preparing our costumes. Do you celebrate Halloween in Kenya? Some seventh graders are dressing up as pop stars in a band that they made up. Our class is going on a field trip tomorrow to a nature museum to study ecosystems. In social studies, we are going to start watching Roots. Until next week!

On that day,we had alot of fun.The ceremony was held at MaaiMahiu secondary school.We met with other students whom we had never met with before.We interacted and learnt songs and so on.At lunch we took a delicious meal.It will be a day to recall. Ngeya students.

This is the 8th Grade Student Council at Bannockburn School! We will be blogging you over the course of this year! We are very excited to find out more about you and your school. There are four of us, Ari, Alex Jenn and, Sarah. Ari and, Alex have been here at this school for nine years. Jenn has been here for eight, and Sarah has been here for five. There are currently twenty-one students in our class, but as of next week there will be 22.

In our friendly club environment ,they plant various crops. Examples are kales,cabbages,onions and spinach.They also help in cleaning our school compound. Also hey make our school compound look neat by planting trees and digging the school garden.We are proud of our school environment club.

Here's a little bit about who we are...

Bannockburn School District 106 was established in 1930 in Lake County, Illinois. The District boundaries take in the Village of Bannockburn including Trinity International University, the easternmost section of Riverwoods, Del Mar Woods, unincorporated areas of West Deerfield and Vernon Townships, and the western edge of Highland Park. Although the District is small in size, it educates a diverse student population.

Today, Bannockburn School houses less than 200 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Our students typically achieve top statewide scores on all measures. In addition to customary regular and special education programs, the school provides the following enhancements:

• Foreign language instruction to students from kindergarten through eighth grade
• Algebra for most students during their eighth grade year
• Science taught in a laboratory setting beginning in the first grade
• Students use a variety of technological tools in their studies across curricular areas. The ration of students to computers is approximately 1:1.

Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extra curricular activities. We offer band, orchestra, choir, interscholastic boys' and girls' basketball and volleyball, a professionally directed school play, and a variety of after-school enrichment activities.

School opens for a new term

Students here are very happy getting back to school after a one month holiday especially when it comes to Rafiki link activities where they have opportunity to use computers unlike at home where they completely don't use computers simply because its difficult to afford them for home use.
Its very interesting and encouraging that the students were able to check out the new changes that have been made to their blog and they were very happy to see that their partner school's blog has been merged to theirs and they can now be able to share their ideas on the same page.

Rafiki link patron is also very happy to receive a digital camera that will be used for Rafiki activities in the school and good news that Rafiki link will offer an opportunity to her to attend internet classes, this is a very good start for Rafiki link this term.

Welcome to the re-designed Ngeya Primary blog! We hope you enjoy our 'new look' and the new features we will be adding over the next few months. We want to create friendships and connections - a community - with students and groups at Ngeya Primary School. therefore, from now on Ngeya blog posts and the posts of partners will be put together onto this Ngeya Primary School blog.

We'd also excited to share with you a newsletter, made by the students of Ngeya Primary School in Maai Mahiu. This newsletter was made without the benefit of electricity; students cooperated to share 2 laptops, brought in by Rafiki Link staff Paul Mwaniki and used twice per week until the batteries ran out. OUR ENVIRONMENT CLUB.

The environment club in our school has been a successful club. This club has many activities in the school. We have been making our school compound look neat by planting trees.We have a garden where we grow crops like cabbages, kale and onions.

The Rafiki Link Club

In our club rafiki link we do many things. We meet on mondays and thursdays. It has many advantages for example, we learn how to use computer which we did not know earlier. Sometimes we learn how to browse, post pictures and how to transfer photos from camera to computer. We thank our teacher mr mwaniki for his good work of teaching us computer.

Dear friends at Negya Primary School,

At Albion Heights we have had a lot of fun and exiting things happening. There was the Talent Show that was called So You Think You Got Talent? It was very fun and amazing because it was well organized and a lot of amazing students sang, danced and played musical instruments for an audience of family and friends. The best part was that all the talent acts were original. The people who took part in the talent show were from Albion Heights school, past graduates and teachers. The Talent show was a total success.
Next we would like to tell you about our Track and Field Day. Track and Field Day is a competition for the entire school. It was very tiring for some people but the people that really put their best effort and won their events went to York University to compete against other schools from the city of Toronto. It was a blast. 2 students from Albion Heights Junior Middle School even made it to the city semi finals, with will be on June 11. Now let’s see if they can make our school proud!
Did you know we also had a chess tournament? It was OK because we lost our trophy to Smithfield Middle School. We came in second to Highfield Junior School. The students that participated were in grades 4, 5 and 6. When the students came back from their tournament they were excited and disappointed at the same time because they lost but they had a great experience.
Now we would like to tell you about our schools girl soccer team. Unfortunately the girls lost to Karen Kain Middle School. They lost 3 to 0. The MVP of the soccer team was Navreet in grade 7. The captain was Kieu Tran. But they did try their best and they had a good time.
The next big event is our Fun Day, which is being organized by the Future Leaders Club. It will benefit Ngeya Primary School. Students will get to come to the gym during the school day and play some fun activities with their friends.
It has been a busy May and June here at Albion Heights. It is hard to believe that the school year is almost over. We are finished on June 29th. All of us in the Future Leaders Club wish you a great summer holiday.

The Olympics are coming to Canada!

We are excited that the 2010 Olympic Winter Games are coming to Canada this year! Our school has been learning about the significance of the Olympic Torch, and eagerly awaiting the start of the games in one week.

We are especially interested in the games because one of the teachers at our school is a former Olympic athlete and a silver medal winner! Her name is Ms. McCormack and she teaches grade 8 and physical education. (That's her picture above) Here is her biography:

Forward Kathy McCormack did not play ice hockey for the first eight years of her life, and she spent the next eight playing on boys’ teams. She made her first appearance on a female team in 1991 at the Canada Winter Games representing New Brunswick, and later won a silver medal at the 1995 Canadian Championships and a bronze one at the 1996 edition with the squad. She joined the Maritimes Sports Blades club in 1996 and then qualified for the Canadian national team the following year. Her efforts earned her a trip to the 1998 Winter Olympics, where she suited up for six matches and took home a silver medal in the first official Olympic women’s ice hockey tournament. In 1999 she moved to Oakville, Ontario to skate with the Oakville Ice of the National Women’s Hockey League, but soon took up a job as a grade school teacher and retired from active play. As of 2009 she is a teacher at Albion Heights Junior Middle School in Toronto, Ontario. She carried the Olympic torch through her hometown of Blackville, New Brunswick in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Rafiki Link 2010

We are happy to be back in school, some of our Rafiki link members graduated last year from standard eight and only a few of us were left though our teacher has recruited new members to replace them. Before we went for December holiday, we had learnt how to send emails and we are now hoping to be communicating with Albion Heights school oftenly, we will let the world know what we are doing, follow on our school blog to see all the good things that we are doing.

Girls Volleyball Team

Hey Kenya,
How are you all? Well, Albion Heights is doing just fine. If you haven't heard, Haiti was hit by an earthquake and many people died. The people who lost their family members really need everybody's help. So, we have decided to raise money to help Haiti by having a bake sale at our school. We have asked the students to bring some desserts like cookies and cakes to sell at the bake sale. Also we have asked the students to have a dress down day on friday, IF they donate $1 the students don't have to wear their uniforms, they can wear anything they want. All the money goes to earthquake relief in Haiti.

Rafiki Link

Rafiki link in our school has been doing great and we have been able to learn how to use computers which we never did before. We learnt how to transfer photos from digital cameras to computers and also how to use microsoft office word where we even went ahead and put it into practice where we made a school newsletter which is shown below. we thank our Rafiki Link co-ordinator for training us.
He usually comes with two laptops and two modems on every Monday and Thursday of the week. the laptops that he carries to our school are not enough because we are ten students, we work in two groups where we have five students on each group and we also we do not have power source in the school for the two laptops so we use them and when they are out of charge we go home. Before we closed the school Mwaniki created email addresses for us where he taught us how to send and receive emails which was really exciting doing it amongst ourselves, we now hope to be communicating a lot with students in Canada next year when we get back to school.

NGEYA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Pupils here come in school at 7am in the morning and leave at 4:30pm, they usually eat lunch in school which is a mixture of maize and beans and we call it “Githeri” in our language. Ngeya has a population of about 1,800 pupils and its a government/ public school. There have been some improvements that have been made in the school and they include; a new hall has been built. Our teachers staff room that looked very bad has been newly painted, we have also been competing in games with a polytechnic that is just next to our school. We are also very happy because of Rafiki Link being introduced to our school and we thank Albion heights for being our partner school. In Rafiki Link club, we have some members who really love playing basketball but we do not have a field for such a game, we only have football, volleyball and netball fields in the school. We also learn how to use computers and how to post on school blog on every Monday and Thursday of the week, Mr. Mwaniki teaches us on the use of computers after classes, we really love these teachings because we are heading in a world of technology which we have a chance of learning in our school. There have been no many public primary schools that are lucky to learn computers, but we are very lucky to have our teacher who teaches us about computers.

ENVIRONMENT

Environment club in our school has been a successful club. This club has many activities in the school .It has been making our school compound look neat by planting trees in our compound .This club has introduced many ways on how they can change the school compound to become an attractive place for many people from outside country, making Ngeya primary school a place that is going to be known everywhere because of tree planting .These changes are that they have introduced vegetable garden that is providing food supplement in our diet .In the garden, they grow crops like; cabbages, kales and onions.

The school is now trying to find out ways on how this club can develop itself and Its also helping to make the environment club to be the most shinning environment club in Longonot zone .The environment members have been watering the trees which they have planted even when the school goes on a holiday, they still come to school to take care of the trees that they planted. These trees are growing very well and they are so healthy and beautiful.

We hope that when those trees grow tall we are going to have very nice learning environment unlike the condition that we learn in is very hot and dry.
