Hi Ngeya students,

Our school has a fun new project and we would love you to be a part of it. The whole school is going to work on a math problem together. Every month our school will have a different problem.

For December, we have a problem about proportional reasoning. Of course, it will be simplified a bit for the younger students, but we thought you'd find the harder version of the problem a fun challenge. The problem originally involved turkey because it is almost Christmas and it is very traditional to eat turkey at Christmas in Canada. However, we've changed it to lamb to make it more appropriate to Kenya.

Here's what we'd like you to do: 1) work on the problem together on a chalkboard. 2) solve the problem on the chalkboard, showing all your work 3) Take a digital picture of your solution 4) post the picture of your solution, maybe with a written explanation of how you solved it, on the blog

We will take some pictures of some of the solutions that Albion Students came up with and post them on the blog.

Hi Ngeya Rafiki Link Club,

In the last two weeks we have celebrated Halloween and Remembrance Day. On October 31, we celebrate Halloween by dressing up in costumes and going to different houses asking for candy. When we say; "Trick or Treat!" the people in the house should give us candy. We also carve faces into pumpkins and light candles inside of them. Then we display these pumpkins outside our houses when it is night. Halloween is a lot of fun for kids.

On November 11, we celebrated Remembrance Day. That is a day when we remember the Canadian soldiers who have fought and died in wars around the world. It is also a day to think about peace and how we can work to have more peace in our world, and less war. Everyone wears red poppy flowers. We had a special assembly where some classes presented songs and poems. Each class also created wreaths to commemorate the soldiers.

Now that it is November, it is dark and cold here in Toronto. It starts to get dark at 5:00pm now, and doesn't get light until 8:00am in the morning. It has not snowed yet, but it is cold. Today's high was 7 degrees Celsius. What is the weather like in Maai Mahiu?

Our school dance is happening next week. We're looking forward to posting and telling you about it.

Rafiki Link Debate - LIVE on Skype!

Students at Bannockburn School and Ngeya Primary School made history this month. They've engaged in the first successful LIVE Skype debates between North America and Kenya. The debate topic was:

"The United States of America will take a position of global neutrality

in all conflict not directly involving America."

Bannockburn students presented arguments PRO and CON this bill, with Ngeya Primary students asking questions via Skype.

Rafiki is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to us here at Ngeya.
Last week we had an amazing skype debate with Bannockburn discussing on Global neutrality.
Bannockburn was presenting their speeches while we were asking some questions.

Through this motion we learnt much about the pros and cons if US became globally neutral.and for the first time we were able to see our friends through skype video. We also saw snow(quite amazing) because our area is very dusty and windy.

Thank you David and Sine for the presentations(we hope we have the names right). It was nice meeting you all.Lets keep Rafiki going.

We are very sorry that we have not blogged for a while. We have been really busy this new year. Happy New Years! In school we are having a Valentines Day celebration. Valentines day is a day full of love where people give each other notes that tell them you care about them. Right now there is snow on the ground and it is very cold. Here in the United States we just finished celebrating Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a celebration where families get together and celebrate the many reasons we have to be thankful. We eat a large feast consisting of roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie, cranberries, apple pie, and much more. It is delicious! Hi this is the eighth grade student council. It was so nice to hear from you! The weather here is getting colder. This Friday is our first school dance of the year. We are all so excited! Halloween is just around the corner, and we are all preparing our costumes. Do you celebrate Halloween in Kenya? Some seventh graders are dressing up as pop stars in a band that they made up. Our class is going on a field trip tomorrow to a nature museum to study ecosystems. In social studies, we are going to start watching Roots. Until next week!

Here's a little bit about who we are...

Bannockburn School District 106 was established in 1930 in Lake County, Illinois. The District boundaries take in the Village of Bannockburn including Trinity International University, the easternmost section of Riverwoods, Del Mar Woods, unincorporated areas of West Deerfield and Vernon Townships, and the western edge of Highland Park. Although the District is small in size, it educates a diverse student population.

Today, Bannockburn School houses less than 200 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Our students typically achieve top statewide scores on all measures. In addition to customary regular and special education programs, the school provides the following enhancements:

Foreign language instruction to students from kindergarten through eighth grade
Algebra for most students during their eighth grade year
Science taught in a laboratory setting beginning in the first grade
Students use a variety of technological tools in their studies across curricular areas. The ration of students to computers is approximately 1:1.

Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extra curricular activities. We offer band, orchestra, choir, interscholastic boys' and girls' basketball and volleyball, a professionally directed school play, and a variety of after-school enrichment activities.

Students here are very happy getting back to school after a one month holiday especially when it comes to Rafiki link activities where they have opportunity to use computers unlike at home where they completely don't use computers simply because its difficult to afford them for home use.
Its very interesting and encouraging that the students were able to check out the new changes that have been made to their blog and they were very happy to see that their partner school's blog has been merged to theirs and they can now be able to share their ideas on the same page.

Rafiki link patron is also very happy to receive a digital camera that will be used for Rafiki activities in the school and good news that Rafiki link will offer an opportunity to her to attend internet classes, this is a very good start for Rafiki link this term.

Dear friends at Negya Primary School,

At Albion Heights we have had a lot of fun and exiting things happening. There was the Talent Show that was called So You Think You Got Talent? It was very fun and amazing because it was well organized and a lot of amazing students sang, danced and played musical instruments for an audience of family and friends. The best part was that all the talent acts were original. The people who took part in the talent show were from Albion Heights school, past graduates and teachers. The Talent show was a total success.
Next we would like to tell you about our Track and Field Day. Track and Field Day is a competition for the entire school. It was very tiring for some people but the people that really put their best effort and won their events went to York University to compete against other schools from the city of Toronto. It was a blast. 2 students from Albion Heights Junior Middle School even made it to the city semi finals, with will be on June 11. Now let’s see if they can make our school proud!
Did you know we also had a chess tournament? It was OK because we lost our trophy to Smithfield Middle School. We came in second to Highfield Junior School. The students that participated were in grades 4, 5 and 6. When the students came back from their tournament they were excited and disappointed at the same time because they lost but they had a great experience.
Now we would like to tell you about our schools girl soccer team. Unfortunately the girls lost to Karen Kain Middle School. They lost 3 to 0. The MVP of the soccer team was Navreet in grade 7. The captain was Kieu Tran. But they did try their best and they had a good time.
The next big event is our Fun Day, which is being organized by the Future Leaders Club. It will benefit Ngeya Primary School. Students will get to come to the gym during the school day and play some fun activities with their friends.
It has been a busy May and June here at Albion Heights. It is hard to believe that the school year is almost over. We are finished on June 29th. All of us in the Future Leaders Club wish you a great summer holiday.

The Olympics are coming to Canada!

We are excited that the 2010 Olympic Winter Games are coming to Canada this year! Our school has been learning about the significance of the Olympic Torch, and eagerly awaiting the start of the games in one week.

We are especially interested in the games because one of the teachers at our school is a former Olympic athlete and a silver medal winner! Her name is Ms. McCormack and she teaches grade 8 and physical education. (That's her picture above) Here is her biography:

Forward Kathy McCormack did not play ice hockey for the first eight years of her life, and she spent the next eight playing on boys’ teams. She made her first appearance on a female team in 1991 at the Canada Winter Games representing New Brunswick, and later won a silver medal at the 1995 Canadian Championships and a bronze one at the 1996 edition with the squad. She joined the Maritimes Sports Blades club in 1996 and then qualified for the Canadian national team the following year. Her efforts earned her a trip to the 1998 Winter Olympics, where she suited up for six matches and took home a silver medal in the first official Olympic women’s ice hockey tournament. In 1999 she moved to Oakville, Ontario to skate with the Oakville Ice of the National Women’s Hockey League, but soon took up a job as a grade school teacher and retired from active play. As of 2009 she is a teacher at Albion Heights Junior Middle School in Toronto, Ontario. She carried the Olympic torch through her hometown of Blackville, New Brunswick in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Hey Kenya,
How are you all? Well, Albion Heights is doing just fine. If you haven't heard, Haiti was hit by an earthquake and many people died. The people who lost their family members really need everybody's help. So, we have decided to raise money to help Haiti by having a bake sale at our school. We have asked the students to bring some desserts like cookies and cakes to sell at the bake sale. Also we have asked the students to have a dress down day on friday, IF they donate $1 the students don't have to wear their uniforms, they can wear anything they want. All the money goes to earthquake relief in Haiti.

Rafiki link in our school has been doing great and we have been able to learn how to use computers which we never did before. We learnt how to transfer photos from digital cameras to computers and also how to use microsoft office word where we even went ahead and put it into practice where we made a school newsletter which is shown below. we thank our Rafiki Link co-ordinator for training us.
He usually comes with two laptops and two modems on every Monday and Thursday of the week. the laptops that he carries to our school are not enough because we are ten students, we work in two groups where we have five students on each group and we also we do not have power source in the school for the two laptops so we use them and when they are out of charge we go home. Before we closed the school Mwaniki created email addresses for us where he taught us how to send and receive emails which was really exciting doing it amongst ourselves, we now hope to be communicating a lot with students in Canada next year when we get back to school.

NGEYA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Pupils here come in school at 7am in the morning and leave at 4:30pm, they usually eat lunch in school which is a mixture of maize and beans and we call it “Githeri” in our language. Ngeya has a population of about 1,800 pupils and its a government/ public school. There have been some improvements that have been made in the school and they include; a new hall has been built. Our teachers staff room that looked very bad has been newly painted, we have also been competing in games with a polytechnic that is just next to our school. We are also very happy because of Rafiki Link being introduced to our school and we thank Albion heights for being our partner school. In Rafiki Link club, we have some members who really love playing basketball but we do not have a field for such a game, we only have football, volleyball and netball fields in the school. We also learn how to use computers and how to post on school blog on every Monday and Thursday of the week, Mr. Mwaniki teaches us on the use of computers after classes, we really love these teachings because we are heading in a world of technology which we have a chance of learning in our school. There have been no many public primary schools that are lucky to learn computers, but we are very lucky to have our teacher who teaches us about computers.

ENVIRONMENT

Environment club in our school has been a successful club. This club has many activities in the school .It has been making our school compound look neat by planting trees in our compound .This club has introduced many ways on how they can change the school compound to become an attractive place for many people from outside country, making Ngeya primary school a place that is going to be known everywhere because of tree planting .These changes are that they have introduced vegetable garden that is providing food supplement in our diet .In the garden, they grow crops like; cabbages, kales and onions.

The school is now trying to find out ways on how this club can develop itself and Its also helping to make the environment club to be the most shinning environment club in Longonot zone .The environment members have been watering the trees which they have planted even when the school goes on a holiday, they still come to school to take care of the trees that they planted. These trees are growing very well and they are so healthy and beautiful.

We hope that when those trees grow tall we are going to have very nice learning environment unlike the condition that we learn in is very hot and dry.

The Olympic torch will be carried by one of the teachers from our school! On Friday, November 27, Ms. McCormack will run with the Olympic torch through her hometown of Blackville, New Brunswick. Ms. McCormack was chosen as a torch runner because she is a former Olympian, playing with the silver medal Canadian women's hockey team at the Nagano Olympics in 1998! Go Ms. McCormack!

All About Albion Heights Junior Middle School

We are going to talk about Albion Heights J.M.S. First, we want to talk about how teachers, staff and our visiting teachers have been treating us. They all treat us equally and fairly. Sometimes, they are strict for our silliness or bad behavior. Some students here in Canada think that punishment for bad behavior is unfair. Albion Heights is committed to caring and equal education to all students. The staff is committed to establishing programs that will help students with their school work.
We have about 500 students in our school and about 30 teachers. All of our teachers are committed to providing attention to each student in our school.

Our school has a lot of different sports. We have a soccer team, hockey team, basketball team, volley ball team, and a cross-county running team.
The cross-county team had a meet on October 5th 2009. The cross-county team went to a very famous park named Centennial Park. All the schools in the G.T.A. (Greater Toronto Area) came there and participated in a run. There were about 900 students from across Toronto who participated in the cross-country meet. From our school, about 50 of us students went. Grades 4-8 participated in a run that was about 2 km long (2000 meters). The grades 7-8 had to run 3 km (3000 m). The people who made it to the top 30 got to go to the city semi-finals. There were 3 students in our school who made it to the top 30. After the top 30, they had to make it to the top 10 in order to make it to the finals. Unfortunately, no one in our school made it to the city finals.
We also have a basketball team and a volley ball team every year. Every other year, we have a soccer and hockey team. Last year, we had a chess team. The chess team competed with other schools. The Albion Heights chess team won the championship trophy. The basketball team didn’t make it to the finals, but they still tried hard and won some games.

Special events

On October 13, we had our annual Terry Fox Walk. The whole school participated and we walked around the neighbourhood. Most of the students donated $2.00 to Terry Fox Foundation. Terry Fox was a famous Canadian, who ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research, even though his leg had been amputated after he had been diagnosed with bone cancer.
On October 26, we had our school clean-up. The whole school participated in making our community look beautiful, we each had one rubber glove to pick up the garbage in our assigned areas.
On October 30, the day before Halloween the primary and junior students had a Halloween parade inside the school. Each of the kids dressed up in their costumes and walked around the whole school to show off their costumes. It was fun and exciting to see and watch the different types of costumes that each student wore.
Another event that happened on October 31 was Halloween. Halloween is a traditional holiday that happens once a year. It's a day for young people to go outside at evening and trick or treat. Kids dress up in costumes and collect treats. Adults stay at home and hand out treats to children who come to their door.

Me to We Day

Going to the Me To We Day event was the best experience ever! all started that Monday morning. We were suppose to be at school for 7 A.M! It was very early for most of us, because most of us wake up at seven.
We were going downtown to be part of an event that would help us learn more about taking action, getting involved and working to make the world a better place.
Everyone was excited but tired because we had to wake up so early. We waked into the bus and noticed two other schools were coming with us. The bus ride was long, but once we got there it was so loud and crazy!
As we walked in the Air Canada Centre (Where the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team plays) we saw so many people and lots of different school. We got more excited and wondered what will happen next. As we walked in the auditorium we heard that Justin Bieber was in the house. Also there was loud and good music playing, as people danced. We saw lots of famous music groups like the Jonas brother, and Hedley. We also saw lots of famous people like Jessie from MTV, former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, Elie Wiesel who won the Nobel Peace Prize and other important people from across the world. We also learned a lot about how we can work together with others in our community, our country and around the world, which helps us as people to make the world a better place!

Our solution to the math challenge

We continued this chart until the 10th term. We found out a expression which is: n (n) + n = x
(n = open lockers)
(x = closed lockers)
But the question says to find how many lockers are open after the 1000th student enters the school.

We can't seem to find the correct answer with this expression. The closest we got was when n=31
Do you have another formula to solve this problem?

At a Secondary School, there are 1000 students and 1000 lockers (cupboards for students to store their books). The caretaker has made sure that all the lockers are shut for the beginning of school. The students decided to play a practical joke on the principal. The first student that enters the school opens every locker. The second student that enters closes every other locker. The third student opens or closes every third locker, the fourth student will open or close every fourth locker and so on... After every student has entered the building, how many lockers will remain open? How can you represent your answer algebraically?

The school was started in 1989 with only 184 pupils in different classes. The first KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) examination was done in 1993 and the candidates who did this exam were only 26. The population has been increasing in a great way due to the introduction of free Primary Education by the government that was introduced in the year 2003 after presidential election in the year 2002. During this time many people were displaced and many of them came and settled in Maai-Mahiu. Their children had to continue with education and since Ngeya Primary school is the one that is in Maai-Mahiu town,they joined this school and they were adimitted unconditionally. Pupils came without uniforms, books and other stationaries because many of the parents could not afford and the government had to provide, it has been providing stationaries and teachers for the school only. There has been no enough desks for the pupils to sit on due to the population increase. Currently the population stands at 1600 with 300 desks
